Gas & LPG Heating

Zero Carbon Supply & Install Gas Boilers Throughout Scotland

★★★★★

Heating represents around 60% of a consumers’ yearly energy bill therefore choosing a new efficient boiler can make a big difference!

Most old gas and LPG boilers are connected to an extended heating system consisting of motorized valves, pumps, and hot water cylinders. The options to improve this type of heating system would include introducing a new condensing regular or system boiler and keep the layout of new/existing valves, new/existing pumps, with the addition of an insulation jacket for cylinders; or change the system completely and introduce a new condensing combination boiler.

Combination boilers use up less space and have the benefit of instant hot water at mains pressure; therefore, no need to heat up a tank which can potentially lose stored energy and money through heat losses. Thus said, condensing regular or system boilers have their advantages too. This type of boiler can be found in areas where water pressure is low and large new build homes where the heating system is serving more than two bathrooms/en-suites at a time. These systems allow greater volumes of hot water to be stored and supplied to several taps and showers constantly.

The modern boiler is made to generate better heat transfer improving its overall efficiency. This is achieved by designing a bigger heat exchanger and allowing more energy to be transferred as hot gases pass through during combustion, raising the temperature of the system water quicker. The more heat transferred to the water through the exchanger means the exhaust gases are much cooler as they leave the boiler. Hydrogen within the fuel produces water vapour during the combustion process. The flue gas temperature can cool to a point the water vapour begins to condense to liquid water recovering additional heat within the exchanger; hence the reason modern boilers are called condensing.

The key difference when identifying a condensing boiler from an installation perspective is an additional plastic pipe connected to the bottom of the boiler. Condensate is acidic, has a pH value between 2.9 - 5 and is connected to a drain with a natural fall or pumped using a condensate pump. Although exposure poses no health risks to the occupants it is corrosive when in contact with materials such as concrete or cast iron therefore correct disposal is crucial to maintain the condition of the existing building fabric. In some circumstance where no drain is present, an external drain is created below ground level using a tray with limestone chips to neutralise pH levels adequately.

Condensing boilers are available for different fossil fuel types and can be supplied for Gas and LPG users. Mains gas is currently the cheapest way to heat homes and businesses and changing an old gas boiler over to a new energy efficient condensing boiler can be completed within the same day. Upgrading to a new energy efficient condensing boiler will save a considerable amount of money for any user depending on the inefficiency of the current boiler, providing it is serviced and maintained in-line with the manufacturers recommendations.
